IdentityServer is a free and open-source framework that has been used by thousands of companies to develop their single sign-on solutions.
For the last four years, Rock Solid Knowledge has been working with the creators of IdentityServer to provide a commercial ecosystem around the framework. This has provided:
- Products and components to enhance the core framework, e.g. AdminUI and SAML2P
- Developer technical assistance
- Production support
- Custom development
Through these paid services, we have been able to give back to the Open Source initiative.
IdentityServer4 has now reached such a level of adoption that building and maintaining it has become a considerable effort. The creators, Dominick and Brock, have decided that this is no longer tenable with free/sponsored development. Therefore, they have announced the next version of IdentityServer (Duende IdentityServer) will require a paid for license for commercial use. You can read the full press release online.
IdentityServer4 is based on .NET Core 3.1, which is the LTS release and supported until December 2022. The IdentityServer team have stated that they will continue to support and fix issues on IdentityServer4 until December 2022, when .NET Core 3.1 LTS ends. The new version of IdentityServer will be available in Q1 2021, supporting both .NET Core 3.1 and .NET 5.0. All of Rock Solid Knowledge's products will be compatible with this new version. We will continue to offer both our products and services for the free and commercial versions of IdentityServer.
Everyone here at Rock Solid Knowledge is excited to continue collaborating with Dominick and Brock to make IdentityServer the premiere single sign-on solution for .NET.
